Should we as Christians pledge our allegiance to anything but Christ? This is a question that popped into my head when the person in charge of Vacation Bible School (VBS) stated that they will start every day with a pledge of allegiance to the American Flag, Christian Flag and then the Bible. This happens a tons of VBSs all over the US but it got me thinking, who are they pledging their allegiance too?

I have not said the pledge of allegiance in years and actually I do not know when the last time it was. Not out of choice but out of opportunities. The last time I remember doing it, it was during an internship years ago, in a small rural church. The VBS kids came up and as a congregation we did these pledges (American Flag, Christian Flag, and the Bible) and my stomached turned when we pledged allegiance to the American flag during worship.

Please don’t get me wrong, I love the country I live in and thank God every day, but that doesn’t mean I agree with what my country does or has done. I guess to break it down further, when a person pledges allegiance to a flag (or in reality the country that flag represents) does that mean that person then goes along with everything that country does, did and will do? Let’s be honest, our flag represents a lot. It represents freedom, a great country, and years of world power. It also stands for destruction, pain, and corruption in the eyes of many around the world. Is that something, as a follower of Christ, I should pledge my allegiance too? If our allegiance is to Christ first can we then profess allegiance to anything/group/nation too?
